Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the exquisite sanctuaries located in Chamoli district of Uttrakhand. It was established in 1972 to protect the rare Himalayan Musk Deer and is also called the Kedarnath Musk Deer Sanctuary. The sanctuary is famous for it’s magnificently snow covered mountain ranges, lakes, glaciers, river systems and rich flora and fauna. The sanctuary is full of dense forest including oak, chir, pine, birch, alpine, rhododendron paddocks with numerous flowering plants of Himalayas.
The Kedarnath Sanctuary has significant avifaunal and aqua faunal species. Jackal, Fox, Himalayan Black Bear, Yellow throated Marten, Leopard, Cat, Snow leopard, Himalayan Musk Deer, Wild Boar, Indian Muntjac, Goral, Sambar, Himalayan Tahr, Serow and bharal are the mammalian species of carnivores here. Another attraction at the place is Kedarnath temple that resides within its boundaries and has great religious significance here. It is also a good place for bird watching, Grey-cheeked Warbler, Little Pied Flycatcher and Nepal Tree-creeper, Himalayan Monal, Koklass Pheasant and Kalij Pheasant are the important species of birds that are found here.
