Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary located on the banks of the Vembanad Lake, the bird sanctuary is spread across 14 acres. Alfred George Baker is believed to have laid the foundations of Kumarakom bird sanctuary in 1840s. Formerly known as Baker’s Estate, it is a favorite haunt of migratory birds like the Siberian stork, egret, darter, heron and teal. Siberian cranes are the most prominent visitors to the park. The major birds seen in bird sanctuary are waterfowl, cuckoo, owl, cormorant, moorhen, Brahminy kite, water duck, Parrots, larks, flycatchers and wood beetle and other types of birds also seen here during their season time.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is one of the best bird sanctuaries in India. A large number of mangrove forests cover most of the area here. Green paddy fields and coconut grooves provide a perfect home to birds. The flora of this rugged landscape adds blush to this charming bird sanctuary. The temperature is moderate throughout the year. The best way to explore the place is by the means of boating, you can also travel around while walking.
