Bhimbetka Rock Shelters are an archaeological site of the Paleolithic Age, that shows the first evidence of human life on the Indian subcontinent, and which was proved to be the foundation of the South Asian Stone Age located in the state of Madhya Pradesh in India. The Bhimbetka rock shelters show the earliest traces of human life in India. These rock caves used to be the shelters of the inhabited and they are prehistoric and happen to be more than 300,000 years ago. According to the archeologists, some of the Stone Age rock paintings found among the Bhimbetka rock caves is about 30,000 years old.These caves were declared as a World Heritage Site.

Why visit Bhimbetka?

 

  • To see these ancient caves and the paintings made on it which actually depicts the presence of human life in the Paleolithic Age as these pre-historic caves house the huge collection of paintings and ancient art made by human beings and they are strong evidence of their presence in India. The paintings are made on the walls of the caves do not usually present any daily activities but they are some of the extraordinary work of them which are true work of art; rather they are extraordinary pieces of art having no similarities with any of the modern art of recent times and they are truly beautiful and admirable.
  • Besides, these Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka you can also see the early times of the human living styles as they as merely 15,000 years old and these cave paintings are 1,000 years old which are quite recent. There are five clusters of natural rock shelters in which you can see these paintings that present the activities of hunting and gathering life resources.
  • You can also see these cave paintings according to the ages of the Paleolithic ages such as till Period I to Period IV. In the caves of Period I you can see the paintings where linear representations of prehistoric figures of animals like tiger, boar, and bison are seen with human figures depicting hunting activities.
  • In the Period II of Mesolithic age you can see smaller images of the weapons which were used in their daily lives mostly in the hunting activities. You can also see the figures of birds and tribal dancing scenes.
  • In the Period III of Chaleolithic Age you can see the paintings of common social exchanges and the connotation between people of that that era.
  • In the Period IV and V caves of Early Historic ages you can see religious symbols that are made in the decorative styles and also you can see various scripts of these ages on the walls of the caves.
  • In the Period of VI and VII of Medieval ages you can see a more linear, geometrically drawn picture which depicts more planned images.
