It has been a seat of several dynasties and this is evident from the existence of several monuments belonging to the medieval period. The architectural style of the monuments reflects the existence of different dynasties that ruled over the state for several years. Some of the prominent and important historical monuments of Assam that are worth visiting are listed below. While the historic monuments of Sivasagar, Tezpur are also praisable.

Navagraha Temple

The Nabagrah or Navagrah temple, located just 3 kms away from the Guwahati Railway Station, is one of the most attracting monuments of very rich historic importance. This temple is the only of its kinds, where the nine planets are worshiped. Nabagraha Temple, nestled on the Chitrachal Hill in Guwahati, used to be a great center for study of astronomy and astrology.
Rang Ghar

Once used to be the sports pavilion for the Ahom Kings, where entertainments activities like buffalo fights and others sports were organized during the Rangali Bihu. The monuments has a very unique Ahom architectural style and attracts huge number of local as well as foreign tourists.
Talatal Ghar

The Talatal Ghar is an unique form of Ahom architecture. This is a three storied building, a part of the Rangpur Palace. This under ground architectural building was used as an army base and have two exit routes.
Kareng Ghar

Above the three storied Talatal Ghar is the Karenghar, a four storied building and the largest of all the Ahom monuments. This monument served as the residential place to the Ahom Kings and now an important tourist destination.
Charaideo

Charaideo is one of the most visited place in Sivasagar district of Assam. The place has excellent historic importance and its tombs are often compared with the Pyramids of Egypt. Charaideo was the first capital of Ahom Kings and contains sacred burial ground of Ahom kings and queens.
Ahom Raja’s Palace

Ahom Raja’s Palace also known as Kareng Ghar Palace situated in the Sivasagar city. It is a seven-storeyed palace built by Ahom king Rajeswara Singha in 1751 CE. The monument has an octagonal small temple, guard room, three large chambers and a big hall with courtyard having separate entrance which is closed to public.
Agni Garh

Agnigarh is one of the most beautiful monument in the Tezpur and is located on a hilltop by the bank of mighty Brahmaputra. This historic palace is well known for its excellent historic important and mind blowing architecture, which surrounded by rampart of fire.
Shiva Dol

An antique piece of Ahom Architecture, nestled on the heart of Sivasagar city. This temple is dedicated to the mighty Lord Shiva. This temple have a golden vase on its top and make it an important place of tourist attraction.
Kamakhya Temple

Kamakhya Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the mighty goddess Kamakhya and is nestled at the top of the Nilachal Hill by the river Brahmaputra. This is one of the most important pilgrimage destination in the city of Guwahati. The temple is nearly 6 kms from the Guwahati railway junction.
