Mecca Masjid – Hyderabad

Mecca Masjid also called as Makkah Masjid is one of the oldest mosques in Hyderabad and one of the largest mosques of India. It is one of the heritage buildings of the city and an important pilgrimage spot and tourist spot too. Makkah Masjid was built during the reign of Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the 5th Qutb Shahi Sultan of Golconda. It was Auranzeb the Mughal emperor who completed the mosque after conquering Hyderabad.

It is an important building in the history of Hyderabad and is spotted adjacent other noteworthy landmarks such as Chowmahalla Palace, Laad Bazaar, and Charminar.

Inside Mecca Masjid

Main hall of the mosque is about 75 feet high, 220 feet wide and 180 feet long supported by 15 arches which can accommodate about 10,000 devotees at a time. The cornices circling the whole mosque structure and the flower themes and friezes over the curves help the devotees and tourist to remember the incredible consideration paid to detail in Qutub Shahi architectural style. They have a close resemblance to the arches at Charminar and Golkonda Fort. The minarets have elegant and circular
balconies with low ornamental walls and arches.
