Sivasagar formerly called as Rangpur is an important tourist destination which is famous for the monuments and historical buildings of Ahom Dynasty. It was the capital of the Ahom Kingdom from 1699 to 1788 . The city boasts of rich heritage buildings , temples and palace of historic times. The Ahoms rules here for about six centuries till they lost to Burmese in 1819 , which later was liberated by Britishers in 1825.
Some of the famous tourist spots of Sivasagar are Joysagar spread over 318 acres is the biggest man-made lake of the country built by Swargadeo Rudra Singha.Gaurisagar a tank sprawling over an area of 150 acres which was built by Ahom queen, Sivasagar Sivadol a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva built in 1734 by Kuwori Ambika, wife of the Swargadeo Siba Singha, Talatal Ghar a palace built as army base and houses secret tunnels and Rangpur Palace, Sivasagar Tai Museum comprising of swords, manuscripts, goblets, and household utensils of Ahom Kingdom and Panidihing Bird Sanctuary famous for migratory birds and houses about 165 species of bird.
