We all know that colours are not pure and have a lot of things mixed like dyes, chemicals, heavy metals, acids, mica, glass powder and other dangerous substances. These chemical substances can be really harmful for the body and can cause itching and rashes. One thing that really needs to be kept in mind is that, even if you get a rash on your skin, do not scratch. Scratching can further harm the skin. If there is an open wound or cut, use a band aid or bandage prior to playing Holi. This will help avoid entry of harmful chemicals in your blood stream.

There are further steps you can take into consideration to protect your hands and feet during Holi-

Apply sunscreen on your skin around 20 minutes prior to playing Holi. Choose one with SPF 20 or above. If you are suffering from pigmentation, apply one with a higher SPF. If you have a dry skin, apply moisturiser after applying sunscreen.

Oil your hands and feet properly before stepping out to play Holi. Coconut oil is preferred but olive oil would also do. Apply mustard oil on your hair generously.

Oiling between finger tips and around nails is very important. Dry skin becomes vulnerable for chemicals to penetrate.

You may apply a very dark shade of nail colour so that Holi colours do not enter your nail bed.

After you return from playing with colours, stand under running water for at least 5 minutes. Don’t scratch any part of your body and do not scrub.

Gently apply soap preferably liquid soap so that the colours start going away.

Since beating the colour from your skin, also takes away the moisture, apply a good amount of moisturiser.

Best way is to use homemade remedies to do away with the colours- lemon juice, curd, sandalwood mix and a mixture of turmeric and white flour. You may also apply besan or multaani mitti pack.

If you want to enjoy Holi, these precautions are a must. The other best way is to use organic colours or homemade colours made from genda flowers or tesu flowers.
