Nestled on the western shores of Dal Lake, Hazratbal Shrine is the most important Islamic religious place in Kashmir. The main significance of Hazratbal Shrine lies in the fact that it houses a strand of the hair of the Prophet Mohammad and it is the big reason the dargah is counted in most Islamic holy place of worship in India. ‘Hazratbal’ means a place which garners respect and high regard. Its pristine white marble beauty is reflected in the waters of the Dal Lake. The history of the Hazratbal Mosque dates back to the 17th century when Sadiq Khan, a famous subedar of Shahjahan, laid out a garden at the bank of Dal Lake and constructed a luxurious building by the name of Ishrat Mahal. It was constructed in 1623 and later converted into a prayer house with some minor changes. This particular shrine is also different from all the other in Kashmir for another reason. It’s the only one with a domed ceiling unlike the rest, which has roofs like pagodas. Thousands of pilgrims and tourists visit the sacred mosque. There are even colorful fairs held at the shrine throughout the year.

One of the oldest and famous dargah in India The dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti, also known as Dargah Sharif, Ajmer Dargah, is a shrine and tomb of the famous Sufi Saint, also referred to as Gharib Nawaz. Ajmer Sharif is the grave of Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti. Born in Chisti region in Afghanistan, Saint Moinuddin Chisti was above the material and worldly things. In his process to teach mankind, the highway of living, he came to India and settled in Ajmer. In Ajmer, he practiced the Sufi Such-e-Kulh that emphasized on Hindu-Muslim unity. The Dargah is one of the most revered shrines of the Muslims. Reckoned to be the most popular place of Islam in India, Ajmer Sharif dargah in Rajasthan is indeed a religious destination that no one should miss. It is said that no prayer at this dargah ever goes unanswered and that is why one can see the place crowded all through the year. It is the oldest and biggest Dargah in South Asia.

Haji Ali Dargah is a famous Sufi Mazars in India located on an islet in Southern Mumbai, surrounded by the Arabian sea, this religious Dargah is amongst the most notable attractions of Mumbai. This Dargah is dedicated to famous Muslim Saint in India Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, who traveled the world to preach Islamic lessons. He gave up materialism and then headed for the pilgrimage towards Mecca. While he was planning to leave for Mecca, his health fell drastically. He asked his followers to cast his body in a coffin in the Arabian Sea when he dies. Soon he left the world and his followers did as they were asked. It is said that the coffin stuck on the piles of rocks, and this is where his Dargah stands today. The mosque is built in Mughal architecture and is ornamented with minarets and dome. It’s a busy mosque, with over 40,000 pilgrims and visitors going there regularly. During Urs and Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi, special Islamic rituals are performed.

Adorned with white marble, the tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti occupies a prominent position among the sacred places of Islam in India. It is situated at the imperial complex of Fatehpur Sikri. This was built by Emperor Akbar between 1580 and 1581 and is believed that the childless women here to get the blessings of the Saint. According to history, Emperor Akbar came to Sikri in search of the Saint to ask for his blessings when all else failed. The Sufi Saint who has Emperor Akbar’s advisor and teacher predicted that the king would father three sons. The prediction came true, and Akbar’s son Jahangir was named as Salim. The Saint passed away in 1571. To continue the memory of the Saint, Akbar constructed a beautiful mosque in the middle of Sikri complex with its places, courts, baths and gardens. This white marble tomb occupies a prominent position among the holy places of Islam in India. commissioned by the court of Mughal Emperor Akbar, it is one of the most significant Sufi shrines in the region and considers as a very sacred place among Muslims as well as Hindus. Every Thursday, thousands of locals visit this shrine to offer their prayer to this great Saint.

Nizamuddin Dargah is the dargah of one of the world’s most famous Sufi saints, Nizamuddin Auliya (1238-1325), who lived in Delhi during the time of Mughal Emperor Akbar. He is counted among the world’s most renowned Sufi Saints. It was built by Muhammad bin Tughlaq. Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah is among the popular attractions of Delhi and is therefore visited by hundreds of people daily. The grand Hazrat Nizamuddin tomb has lattice screens called jails, marble arches, and courtyards. Devotees tiered threads to these screens with a belief that their wishes would be granted. Within the Dargah complex, tombs of the famous poet, Amir Khusrao and Jahan Ara Begum, a Mughal Princess are also located. Also, you would find many other tombs of people who have a wish to be buried next to the Sufi Saint after their death, in the Dargah complex. Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah is renowned all over the country for the unique experience it offers- a chance to hear and enjoy Sufi music up close. The qawwali sessions on Thursday evenings are incredibly popular and people from all walks of life come in huge numbers to be swept up in the magic of the devotional soul-stirring music. It was featured in a number of Bollywood films including Rockstar, Delhi 6, and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Islamic festivals Urs and death anniversary of the Sufi Saint, Nizamuddin Auliya, and Amir Khusrao are celebrated here.

Haji Pir Dargah is a unique identity of Kutch district in Gujarat. It is the shrine of famous Saint known as Haji Pir. It is said that Ali Akbar was a soldier of Shahabuddin Ghori. After his service is over he settled in a local village named Nara and started to help people and animals. He used to save the cows that were driven away by the local goons and dacoits. He, later on, was entitled to be a “Haji” after he visited the greatest pilgrimage of the followers of the Islam faith the Haj. The locals used to call him Haji Pir and Zinda Pir. People here believe those who visit the Haji Pir Dargah and make a wish that comes true. Haji Pir is an important shrine strategically and culturally. It is the ideal example of a shrine that goes beyond the borders of the religious differences.

Reckoned to be the largest mosque in India and most famous dargah in Delhi. This Masjid was built between 1644 and 1656 by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. The mosque has been designed by-Ustad Khalil, who was known to be the great sculptor of his time. This Mughal monument is a typical structure with hundred domes & pillars and built in yellow sandstone. The carving made in the mosque is exceptional and the major highlight here is that none of the domes are of similar height, each dome is different from the other. The courtyard of the mosque can hold up to 25,000 people and is visited by millions of people each year.

The meaning of Taj-Ul-Masjid translates to ‘The Crown of Mosques’, and the magnificent architects reflect just that. It is a popular mosque in Bhopal. The Masjid was built between the years 1868 and 1901. Started by Sultan Shah Jehan begum of Bhopal, the construction continued by her daughter Sultan Jahan Begum but could not complete it in her lifetime due to lack of funds and the war of 1857. The construction restarted in the year 1971 by Maulana Sayed Hashmat Ali Sahab and Allama Mohammad Imran Khan Nadwi Azhari of Bhopal. Taj-Ul-Masjid got completed in 1985. The eastern entry gate was made again putting into use the ancient motifs from Syrian mosques, belonging to around 1250. This was a contribution by the Emir of Kuwaiti in the memory of his deceased wife. Made of red stones, the mosque is situated by the lake referred to as the Motia Talab. The mosque has 3 domes and 2 minarets. The Masjid is open on all days, but Non-Muslims are not allowed inside on Fridays. A sign of the determination of the female ruler, the mosque is also a symbol of devotion. The mosque holds ‘remarkable similarity with the architecture of Jama Masjid of Delhi, including decorations.

Located near Gandak ki Baoli in the Mehrauli village, about 400 meters from Adham Khan’s tomb lies the Dargah of Qutubuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki, popularly known as Qutub Sahib. He was born on 1173 in a small town called Osh in the Fergana Valley (present Osh in the Southern Kyrgyz Republic, part of historic Transoxania), he came to India in the late 12th century and lived here during the reign of Emperor Iltutmish, the founder of slave dynasty. He is held in high esteem and has been highly regarded for centuries because he was the disciple and spiritual successor of Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti of Ajmer. Qutub Sahib died in 1235 and his grave is the main shrine of the dargah, which was decorated by many later rulers. The dargah has many other structures like the assembly house, robe chamber, mosque and several imposing gates. Just as in the Nizamuddin shrine, there are many graves within the premises of this dargah for there were many who wanted to be buried close to the Saint. Some popular people buried here are Bahadur Shah I, Shah Alam II and Akbar II. The Qutub Sahib Dargah is considered to be a very sacred place by pilgrims of different religions. It is believed that one, who truly believes in the Saint, makes a wish by tying a thread near the grave. One can see many colorful threads tied in the marble screens.

It is the oldest mosque in Hyderabad and is situated near Charminar, Chowmahalla Palace, and Laad Bazaar. The bricks used for the construction of the mosque were brought all the way from the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. For this reason, this gorgeous mosque was named after the Grand Mosque in Mecca. According to history, the construction of the mosque began in the year 1614 when Sultan Muhammad Qutub Shah ruled the state, but it was in 1687 when Aurangzeb annexed the Golconda kingdom and finished the construction of the Mecca Masjid, which becomes the popular and beautiful mosque. One is bound to be awe-struck by the beautifully patterned walls of the mosque, which are made of granite.
