Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary also referred as the Muthunga Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on 345 square kilometers of densely forested land. It was established in 1973 and has been declared as project elephant site in 1991-92. One can spot herd of elephants roaming in the vicinity. It is the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala and is under consideration by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for selection as a World Heritage Site. The sanctuary is popular for bird watching as birds like peacocks, babblers, egrets, snipes, bulbuls, peafowl, and cormorants can be seen here.

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is also home to wide range of shrubs such as Randia uliginosa, Helicteres isora and herbs including Sida cordifolia, Rauvolfia and Ageratum conyzoides. The sanctuary resides different animal species such as elephants, deer, big cats, monkeys, sambar, Malabar squirrel, panther, langurs, bonnet macaques, bison and bear. Rare species of Slender Loris can also be seen here. And monitor lizard, coral snake, pit vipers, crocodiles, golden tree snakes, chameleon and flap shell turtles are the reptiles found here. Elephant rides and Jeep safaris are also available here and give a wonderful experience at the place.

Monday to Sunday: 7:00 am to 10:00 am, 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm

For Foreign Tourist: Rs.100/-

Safari: Rs.300 per Trip for Jeep Safari
