18th century marked the beginning of the banking system in India. Bank of Hindostan was the among the first banks established in 1770 and the General Bank of India which was established in 1786 but soon failed. State Bank of India is the oldest running banks in India and among the top government banks in India. It started as Bank of Calcutta in the year 1806, which was later renamed as Bank of Bengal in 1809. Later the three top banks of India funded by the government was merged in 1921 to establish Imperial Bank of India which after India’s independence was renamed to State Bank of India.

India have currently 27 government or public sectors banks of which 19 are nationalized banks in India and rest are SBI and its sub-associate banks. Government Banks in India are managed and controlled by the government of India. Many of these nationalized banks are serving the nation for over centuries.
