Gir National Park and Sanctuary is located in the state of Gujarat in India. This Wildlife Sanctuary was established in the year 1965 and known as a house of Asiatic Lions. This national Park is located in the deciduous green forests on the hilly areas of Junagarh District in between many rivers and with a nearby Kamleshwar Dam which houses numerous crocodiles. This is a declared protected area by the state government of Gujarat and various NGOs. There are various forests in this area which makes around 400 species of various plants, 3000 species of birds and 38 species of mammals along with various other kinds of animals in the sanctuary.
Why visit Gir National Park?
- Gir National Park is known as one of the best wildlife sanctuaries in the country and known for housing numerous mammals and most importantly the Asiatic Lion and Leopards. You can have a look to the numerous mammals such as, Indian Leopards, Indian Cobras, Indian Palm Civets, Sloth bears, Jungle cats, Striped Hyenas, Golden Jackals, antelopes, Indian Mongoose, and rattle snakes. You can also spot Desert cats and Rusty-spotted cats but they are seen very rare.
- Among various birds you can spot various endangered lesser Florican and the Saras crane are recorded in the grasslands along the perifery of the sanctuary. Many species like the painted sandgrouse, grey francolin, quails, Asian paradise flycatcher, greenish warbler white-browed black-napedfantail, monarch, Asian brown flycatcher, grey-headed flycatcher, verditer flycatcher, tickell’s blue flycatcher, , white-eye, coppersmith barbet, Indian white backed vulture,
- If you are at Gir National Park then do not miss to get on with the Jeep Safari. You can enjoy the views of Lions, Leopards and other mammals which you can view from a distance. As Gir National Park is the last place to spot the Asiatic Ions you can take help of the safari camps which can be obtained inside the National Park with various luxurious amenities. You can also view some of the very interesting farms inside the Gir national Park of strawberry and sugarcane and most importantly the crocodile farm is worth watching where you can spot numerous crocodiles sleeping under the sun.
- Besides visiting Gir you can also have a visit to the local areas such as Girnar Temple, an ancient Jain temple internationally known for its intricate cravings. Also do not miss to visit the Somnath Temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and at this place you will get to enjoy on the beaches and spot some of the rarest birds such as dunlin, ruddy turnstone, red necked phalarope, Caspian, gull billed and many others.
Gir National Park Tips and Recommendations
- Make sure to not to go very close to the animals and throw foods at them. Or do not carry any weapon or bird shooting items with your otherwise you may face lega l actions from the state government and Indian Penal Codes.
- Do not forget to visit one of the Union territory of India – the DIU Island and its lovely beaches which is very close to Gir and you can have a great time out there
