Old Fort Purana Quila

Old Fort or Purana Quila located in Delhi is one of the most oldest and ancient forts of Delhi built by the Afghan king Sher Shah Suri in 1541. It is believed that the site of the fort was the capital of the Pandavas with history dating back to nearly more than 5000 years old. Archaeological Survey of India have done different unearthing here in which they have discovered antiquities dating 1000 BC, and different articles and stoneware connoting constant home from Mauryan to Sunga, Kushana, Gupta, Rajput, Delhi Sultanate and Mughal periods.

There are a number of wonderful structures within the fort locality like the Kairul Manzil, Qila Kuhna Masjid, Sher Mandal and a museum near the fort that holds many artifacts belonging to the Mughal era. A gleaming lake near the Old Fort allows boating facilities to the tourists and gives a beautiful view of the fort. The Sound and Light Show is the great highlight of the place that presents the history of Delhi.

Inside Purana Quila

Presently many of the fort architecture have ruined due to attacks. The walls of the Fort ascent to a height of 18 metres, cross something like 1.5 km, and have three angled gateways: the Bara Darwaza confronting west, which is still being used today; the south entryway regarded as the ‘Humayun Gate’ and third one ‘Talaqi Gate’, frequently reputed to be the “forbidden gate”. There are various dazzling structures inside the post premises like the Kairul Manzil, Qila Kuhna Masjid, Sher Mandal and a gallery close to the fortification that holds numerous ancient rarities having a place with the Mughal time. Regardless of the grandeurs of the exterior, few of inside structures have made to present.

Architecture

Purana Qila is a great example of Lodi style of architecture are evident influences of Hindu, Afghani and Mughal style of architecture. The fort is made from red sandstone with marbles on the walls. There are three gates at the fort – Bada Darwaza, Talaqi Darwaza and Humayun Darwaza which allows entry into the fort. All three gates are double storied with semi-circular bastion towers on each side. The fascinating building endures the ruins of time.
