Daulatabad Fort a formidable hill fort is located in the outskirts of Aurangabad City. This place Daulatabad was once known as Devagiri remained the capital of Tughlaq dynasty,though the city of Devagiri was founded in 1187 AD by the Yadava king Bhillan V, the fort was constructed during the reign of Singhana II during 1210-46 AD. The Fort is located atop the hill about 200 meters high and comprises of huge defensive walls with large number of bastions.
Daulatabad Fort have seen many ups and downs and various kingdoms capturing it captured and re-captured, by the Mughals, the Marathas, the Peshwas and at last the fort was under the control of the Nizams of Hyderabad in 1724 A.D. which was under their control till independence. The Fort is located on the way to Ellora groups of caves and is thus the major tourist spot for tourists and locals also.
Inside Daulatabad Fort
Daulatabad Fort comprises of various buildings some in ruins and some intact as today also. Amon them some of the most popular ones are Chand Minar and the Chini Mahal . The Minar is about 63 metres in height and was built by Alauddin Bahman Shah in 1435 AD. While Chini Mahal is a place where Abdul Hasan Tana Shah, the last king Golconda, was imprisoned by Aurangzeb.
