Gingee Fort is also known as Senji Fort, One of the surviving fort in Tamil Nadu located at a distance of 160 km from the heart of the city. Gingee fort is one of the oldest forts in the state which is known for its magnificent architecture, it is constructed on a small rocky hill to prevent an enemy from entering the premises. currently, this fort was maintained by Archeological Department of India and it is one of the lesser known tourist places in South India.
Ranjankudi Fort, Tamil Nadu
Ranjankudi Fort is a 17th century oldest fort located at a distance of 22 km from the Tamil Nadu, it was constructed by the feudatory of the Nawab of the Carnatic. The fort has three fortifications at different heights. It is rectangular on plan with semi-circular bastions and surrounded by a
moat fed by a tank on the Southern side. This fort is under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India.
Sankagiri Fort, Tamil Nadu
One of the historical forts in Tamil Nadu Sankagiri Fort is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, located at a distance of 22 km from the main city center, It was built in 15th century by the Vijayanagar Empire. Sankagiri Fort has a 14 wall that was built around the hill and the last phase these walls were built by the British. There are two oil godowns at the fort and a Varadharaja temple. This apart there are two official buildings and a memorial park.
Udayagiri Fort, Tamil Nadu
Udayagiri Fort is also known as De Lannoy’s Fort located on the Thiruvananthapuram – Nagercoil National Highway in Tamilnadu. The fort was built of huge granite stones and it covers an area of 90 acres, enclosed by isolated hills that are almost 260 feet in height. Once it was known as Dillanai Kottai, meaning De Lannoy’s Fort, in the chief’s honor.
Vellore Fort, Tamil Nadu
One of the popular forts in Tamil Nadu situated the heart of the city and it was built by the Vijayanagara kings. After few years, the fort’s claim was given to the Bijapur sultans. After that, it got shifted to the Marathas and then to the Carnatic Nawabs and at the end, this control was handed over to the British. The Vellore Fort is maintained by the Indian government with the Archaeological Department.
Dindigul Fort, Tamil Nadu
Dindigul Fort is a 17-century hill fort located about 400km from Chennai, It was built by the Madurai Nayak king Muthu Krishnappa Nayak in 1605. In the early 18th century, the fort was occupied by the Wodeyars of the Kingdom of Mysore. Later during the reign of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan of Mysore, Dindigul Fort became one of the most notable forts. At present this fort is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Namakkal Fort, Tamil Nadu
Namakkal Fort is a historic fort in Tamil Nadu located on the top of a hillock made of a single rock. It is one of a few usually strong forts steeped in history of the district. The fort was under Mysore until it was occupied by the British East India Company in 1769. Namakkal fort has the worship place for both Hindus and Muslims. Till date both the communities visit this place for worship.
