Mudumalai National Park is a wildlife Sanctuary located on the Nilgiri Hills of the state of Tamil Nadu in India. The sanctuary has built up with combination of open grassland with flat land, a number of swamps and valleys. You can spot a number of wild species along with numerous species of birds as this park is rich in fauna and the sanctuary is a favorite among the wildlife lovers and bird watchers too. You can see a good number of tigers at this sanctuary, as you can have the facility of jeep safari to watch them more closely. Mudumalai is surrounded by other wildlife sanctuaries such as Bandipur National ParkNagarhole National ParkWayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and in the south are Mukurthi National Park and Silent Valley National Park. It also connects to the Sathyamangalam wildlife sanctuary and Reserve forests and Biligirirangan Hills Wildlife Sanctuary because this park acts as an important corridor to these sanctuaries.

Why visit Mudumalai National Park?

 

  • In the Mudumalai National Park you can spot 55 species of mammals 227 species of birds 21 species of amphibian’s 34 species of reptiles and 50 species of fishes. Among animals you can spot Indian leopard,Bengal tiger, Jungle cat and Leopard cat because this sanctuary is also a tiger reserve and among others you can spot Indian elephants, gaurs, panthers, dhole, striped hyena, sloth bear, bonnet macaque, wild boar, Indian Muntjac, Sambar deer, Golden Jackal Gray Langur, and many others.
  • Among various species of reptiles you can see Monitor Lizard, Python, Flying Lizard, Krait Spectacled Cobra, and Asian Pit Vipers etc.
  • Mudumalai National Park is a great place for bird watchers as you can spot Hornbills, Painted Spurfowl, Golden Oriole, Chloropsis, Golden-backed Woodpecker, Indian Cuckoo, Paradise flycatcher, Grey-bellied Cuckoo, Blue-winged Parakeet, Crimson-backed Sunbird,Fairy bluebird, Malabar Great Black Woodpecker, Alpine Swift, Jungle fowl, Racket-tailed Drongo, Black-hooded Oriole, Peacock, Emerald Dove, Red Spurfowl, Grey Francolin, Striped Tit-babbler, Painted Bush Quail, Greater Racket-tailed Drongo, Cuckoo shrikeWhite-bellied Woodpecker, Chestnut-headed Bee-eater Lesser Yellownape, Golden Woodpecker, Streak-throated Woodpecker, Green Imperial Pigeon, Pompadour Green Pigeon, Black-headed, Grey-headed Bulbul, Forest Wagtail, and Loten’s Sunbird are seen here.
  • Beside watching the flora and fauna in Mudumalai National Park you can have a visit to the waterfalls and a historical place which is known as Gopalaswamy Betta. This is a place which is settled amidst the forests and you can visit the Vishnu Temple located here.

  • In the Mudumalai National Park you can go for an elephant safari and camping there and also have an excellent experience in viewing the jungle completely and this is especially organized by the forest department.
  • You can buy several items from this park such as various aromatic spices, coffee powder, tea dust, handicrafts, various products that are cultivated on hills such as honey, eucalyptus oil and among fruits you can buy fresh and delicious mango and jackfruit.
  • People who are pure vegetarian make sure to carry some packed foods with you as you will not get such foods in this park.
